Where a thermal camera shows you an anomaly, a thermo detector or moisture meter tells you whether that anomaly is actually water. This is the confirmation step, and skipping it is how a cold spot caused by a draught gets treated as a leak.

Where it is used

How we choose between them

A pinless meter reads without marking the finish, which matters in an occupied flat. A pin meter reads deeper and more definitively where a hole is acceptable. For pre-coating checks the reading that actually matters is substrate moisture against the coating manufacturer’s stated limit — applying a membrane to a slab above that limit is a guaranteed failure.
