Integral Waterproofing Compounds

An integral waterproofing compound is added to the concrete, mortar or plaster while it is being mixed, so the material itself resists water rather than depending on a coating applied later. It is the cheapest waterproofing available on a building that has not been cast yet, and the only one that cannot be skipped by a painter in a hurry.

The choice between an integral compound and a surface coating is not either/or — on a building being constructed now, the compound goes in the mix and the coating goes on afterwards. Where a structure already exists, an integral compound only helps in the parts being recast or replastered.
