There is no single best waterproofing system. There is a right system for a given surface, exposure and budget. Here is how the main options genuinely compare.
Cementitious coatings
Roughly ₹55–80 per sq ft. Typical life 4–7 years.
A cement-based slurry, often polymer-modified, brushed or sprayed on. Economical, easy to apply, bonds well to concrete, and safe for potable water tanks.
Its weakness is elasticity — it has very little. On a surface that moves with temperature, it cracks along with the substrate. Best for water tanks, internal wet areas and sheltered surfaces that do not flex.
Acrylic elastomeric coatings
Roughly ₹70–110 per sq ft. Typical life 5–8 years.
Liquid-applied, UV-stable, and genuinely elastic, so it bridges hairline cracks as the slab moves. Good on exposed terraces. Reflective grades reduce heat gain into the floor below, which is a real benefit through a Pune summer.
Less suited to areas with standing water for long periods, or heavy foot traffic.
APP / torch-applied membranes
Roughly ₹90–150 per sq ft. Typical life 10–15 years.
Bitumen sheet rolled out and bonded with a torch. Thick, robust and highly reliable against ponding water, which is why it is standard on large flat roofs and podiums.
It needs skilled application — the overlaps and terminations are where failures happen — and it usually needs protection above it if the area is trafficked.

Polyurethane (PU) systems
Roughly ₹120–200 per sq ft. Typical life 10–15 years.
Seamless, highly elastic, very durable, and excellent over surfaces with movement or complex detailing. Strong performer on exposed terraces, podium decks and industrial roofs.
It demands a properly prepared, dry substrate and correct primer. Applied over damp concrete it will blister and lift.
Injection grouting
Priced per running foot, not per sq ft.
Not a coating at all — a repair technique. Resin is injected under pressure into a crack to seal the water path through the structure. Used alongside a coating system, not instead of one.
A rough guide
- Exposed terrace — elastomeric or PU; APP where ponding is likely
- Water tank — cementitious, food-grade for potable water
- Bathroom sunk slab — cementitious or PU membrane
- Basement — crystalline plus injection grouting
- External walls — breathable water-repellent coating
- Industrial roof — PU or APP for durability under foot traffic
As an authorised Dr. Fixit applicator and an Asian Paints and Birla Opus partner, we can specify from any of these ranges — so the recommendation follows the surface, not our stock.
